The medicine was developed by Johnson & Johnson in South Africa and tested in the U. S. and Australia in the hope that it would be better for people living with depression. In the U. S., the medicine, sold under the brand name Zyban, was prescribed to people with a history of depression. The product, marketed as Wellbutrin SR, was launched in the U. in March 2024, and was available for around $13 for a month's supply.
